The European marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna) is a small, colorful mammal that belongs to the weasel family. It has a long body, short legs, and a bushy tail. Its fur is very unique, with a mix of yellow, white, brown, and black patches that look like a marble pattern. Its face is also striking, often showing a dark mask across the eyes and lighter fur on the forehead and ears. This animal may look cute, but it can defend itself by releasing a strong, unpleasant smell when it feels threatened.

This species lives in dry, open areas such as grasslands, deserts, and semi-deserts. It can be found in parts of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. European marbled polecats often make their homes in burrows, sometimes taking over tunnels made by other animals. They usually live alone and are most active at night. When it comes to reproduction, females give birth to a small litter of about 4 to 8 babies in the spring. The young are born blind and helpless, but they grow quickly and learn to hunt within a few months.

The European marbled polecat is considered a vulnerable species, meaning it faces a risk of becoming endangered. One of the main reasons for its decline is habitat loss caused by farming, construction, and land development. In some areas, the animals it preys on are also disappearing, making it harder for the polecat to find food. Conservation efforts include protecting natural habitats, studying the species in the wild, and creating laws to limit harmful human activities. These actions are important to help ensure that this unique animal survives for future generations.

This protected wetland is an important habitat for marine life, birds, and coastal species, and scientists have warned that oil pollution could damage one of the most sensitive ecosystems in the region.

The Black Sea has become one of the clearest examples of how war can damage wildlife as well as people. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, scientists and conservation groups have warned that explosions, naval activity, pollution, and disrupted monitoring have all added new pressure to marine life in the region. One of the species drawing the most concern is the Black Sea bottlenose dolphin.
